Needing some form of betrayal for my story. please & thank you?

What I'm thinking is there could some extremely sentimental object that belongs to the father (or mother?) that the girl has always been quite fond of, a mirror, car, vase, watch or clock, jewelry, article of clothing, a bicycle, boat, piece of furniture, or really whatever that the father gives to the boy who then in turn abuses it: destroys it (intentionally or not), loses it, or peddles it.
